Car Key Programming — Keys Matched to Your Vehicle
Programming is the electronic half of modern car key work. Every key that starts a vehicle built in the last couple of decades contains a chip the car has to recognise; if that recognition fails, the engine will not start no matter how well the metal fits.
A cut key with no programming is a door key. A programmed key is a car key. We handle programming as part of a new key job, and as standalone work where a customer already has a suitable fob.
What programming actually involves
We connect to the vehicle and work with its own security system so that the key's electronic identity is accepted. The exact route depends on the manufacturer and the age of the vehicle, and the equipment used has to suit that system.
We do not publish step-by-step procedures, and we would be cautious of anyone who does. What matters to you as a customer is that the work is done properly at your vehicle and that the key is tested before we leave.
When programming is needed
Programming comes up in several everyday situations, not only after a key is lost.

Honest limits
Not every key on every vehicle can be programmed by an independent auto locksmith. Some manufacturers restrict certain systems and model years, and some aftermarket fobs are simply poor quality. We check your vehicle first and tell you if a main dealer is the realistic option — that is more useful to you than an optimistic booking that fails on the day.

- Is programming done at my vehicle?
- Yes. Programming requires access to the vehicle, so it is carried out where the car is parked.
- Can you programme a fob I bought myself?
- Often, but not always. Quality varies significantly between aftermarket fobs, and some cannot be matched reliably to a vehicle. We will tell you honestly once we have seen it.
- Will programming a new key affect my existing keys?
- Normally your existing keys continue to work. Some procedures on some vehicles require all keys to be present, which is one reason we ask about your other keys when booking.
- My remote buttons stopped working but the car starts — is that programming?
- Not necessarily. That pattern often points to a battery, a worn button or a damaged fob rather than lost programming, and it is worth checking the simple things first.
