BMW Car Keys — Replacement, Spare & Programming

BMW vehicles have used several different styles of key over the years, including older transponder keys, remote keys, the flat diamond-style remote, later remote fobs, and proximity or Comfort Access keys on newer models.

Two BMWs with similar model names can use completely different key and security systems depending on generation and year. That is why we identify the vehicle first and then confirm which replacement, spare-key or programming options apply, rather than working from the model name alone.

Replacing a damaged or unreliable BMW key, adding a second key while a working key remains, and dealing with an all-keys-lost BMW are three different jobs with different requirements.

On supported vehicles, arranging a spare car key while a working key remains can avoid the inconvenience and expense of an all-keys-lost situation later, although the work still depends on the individual BMW.

If a BMW key is lost or stolen, please provide the model, registration, year if known, whether any working keys remain, and where the vehicle is parked. Support depends heavily on the BMW generation and security system, so the vehicle is checked before the job is confirmed through our Lost Car Keys service.

Where the particular vehicle and system support it, missing keys may sometimes be removed from the keys recognised by the vehicle during replacement-key work. This is not possible on every BMW.

Newer BMWs may use proximity or Comfort Access key systems. Common reasons customers contact us include a key not being detected, intermittent key recognition, a damaged fob, a flat or weak key battery, or other proximity-key issues.

A 'key not detected' warning does not automatically mean a replacement key is required. Battery condition, fob damage and vehicle-related faults can produce similar symptoms, so we identify and check the individual vehicle rather than diagnosing it from a website.
